F-Stop: congratulations!

works by Chih Ying, Bruno Siegrist, Julia Mensch, Paida Larsen, Boaz Levin. all photos Chih Ying

Congratulations everybody to a fantastic and inspiring show in Leipzig.
It came out very well, specifically the new works made for the exhibition. Apart from the show itself I was impressed by the spirit of cooperation, teamwork and harmony prevailing in the preparation for the show.

Sweat painting, Giorgi Gago Gagoshidze

This is due in large parts to the fantastic support by curators, who put up a really impressive range of shows and gave us unusually good conditions. But main credit goes to Leon, who organized the event, got the class invited and, apart from editing his own beautiful piece for the show carried and drove the equipment as well as setting and curating the overall framework. Thanks! Thanks also to everyone who installed electricity, painted cables, schlepped vitrines and flat screens, bought tickets and breakfast and played Star Wars with Esme. Pls also everybody send more pictures, installation shots especially of Leons exhibit and of Chih Ying who took everybody elses pictures.! the post is still in progress: I need more pictures to fully represent the show, so send them on…

speculative mobility – lensbased takes part in f-stop festival Leipzig

lensbased class  is happy to announce it’s participation in this years F-Stop Festival for Photography in Leipzig. The festival focusses on the concept of documentation and the problematic of visual media coverage. Our contribution revolves around the idea of speculative mobility, what-if movements, unlikely encounters, revolving and retracting spaces, the architecture of both rendering and rendition, compressed trajectories and incompossible futures.

Workshop about biennialism; Naomi Hennig, Arnela Mukanovic 16./17.06 & 30.06/01.07.

Hello all,
this is to remind you of signing up for the double-weekend seminar on the phenomenon of BIENNIALS. HERE::::  null@fakultaetnull.org
Most texts we look at will be in english, the rest will be translated back and forth on the fly.
Some buzzwords for the discussion on Taipeh Biennial, Documenta, Manifesta, Venice:
large scale exhibitions as ideological machines, national and ethnic representation, european identity construction, city & area-branding, globalisation, hegemony and counter-hegemony. (sure we will also be able to find some cool aspects, like, gigantic and mega-expensive art, more tourism, etc.)
We will have guests, presenting their research on or experiences from inside the biennial parcour.
(Andre Raatzsch will talk about his exit from the Roma Pavillion in Venice)
The second weekend will be devoted to the discussion on the 7th Berlin Biennial, maybe to wrap up and review what has been going on the last months.
Hope to see you //
Naomi & Arnela

wiki spam

hello everybody,
unfortunately it seems that the lensbased wiki has become a popular playground for spambots that change the pages. we managed to keep them out for a while by blocking IPs but now they change so fast that it’s not possible anymore, so it looks like password protecting the page is the only possible option.
since i hope the bot is stupid i’ll try a dumb login first:
username and pass are both set to the room number of the class meetings (just the number, nothing else)
let’s hope that keeps them out and sorry for the inconvenience.

bloated and starved to offer a seamless patchwork of the permanently disjointed.”

Additional lecture for junkspace seminar, 1.6.10h R115

1.6. 10h Charles Heller, Geneva
2011 is the deadliest year in the Mediterranean. The war in Libya forces many people to leave the country. During this period, a vessel loaded with 73 refugees runs out of fuel at sea. During it´s long drift it is spotted by several NATO ships and helicopters, none of which help. All but 11 of the refugees die. Charles Heller talks about the juridical, visual and imaginary construction of the Mediterranean. His lecture addresses the reconstruction of the drift (co-authored with Lorenzo Pezzani) and the construction of a juridical case involving multiple layers of testimony and evidence using remote sensing tools and oceanographic calculation. It refers to the building of the Mediterranean as a selection tool and filter by overlapping international and national jurisdictions as well as by the imagery deployed to deter people from crossing it.
Imagine this was the reverse shot. Now edit.

A Klee painting named ‘Angelus Novus’ shows an angel looking as though he is about to move away from something he is fixedly contemplating. His eyes are staring, his mouth is open, his wings are spread. This is how one pictures the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing in from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such a violence that the angel can no longer close them. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress.
