for everybody who doesnt already know, i’m also at the university during the semester break, like usual wednesday and thursday, but from now on at slightly different times 12.30-16.30h. should i not be able to be there at some specific date, i’ll write an email and put a note up on the blog. this thursday, march 5th, i’ll have to leave early, so if you’d like to discuss something, please come by before 15.30h.

i would also like to ask everybody to clean up their old computer data on the scratch disks and student accounts until march 24th. all the data that is older then one year will be deleted after that to make room for new projects. the files on your personal account on the server will not be affected, you can keep them there as long as you want, but i recommend making a backup of all important files once every few months anyway!

also i’m going to clean out the small room next to 98b (the one with the emergency exit). it’s mostly painting stuff and old darkroom gear, so please secure what you still need until march 24th as well, everything which is still there by then will need to be thrown away.

there wont be any workshop next week because of the absolventenprüfung preparations.

on january 29th, we’ll continue with a workshop about the basics of page layout with indesign.

some information for the schedule over christmas and new
year:

the last workshop this year will be on december 11th,
(about color profiles and printing – we’ll also discuss the
topics for the new year). the first workshop new year will
be on january 8th.

i’m going to be at the university as usual until thursday,
december 18th, and then again on friday, january 2nd,
13-17h, and afterwards reguarly each wednesday and thursday.

update: the last workshop before christmas will be about printing on the 11.12. at that date we’ll also discuss the topic for the beginning of next year. the first workshop in the new year will be on the 08.01.09.

the plan for this semester is to combine some theoretical background information with a lot of practical examples.

i’d like to start with the topic of analog and digital media and their differences (with focus on photography, but most of it applies to film/video as well). below the planned schedule, if we need more time on a certain area that might change a bit.
the workshop is usually at thursdays from 14-17h in room 98.
exceptions and changes will be always reflected on the blog.

ideological aspects and working methods

hands-on analog and digital cameras:
snapshot, rangefinders, SLR, medium format, etc
how they influence aesthetics, quality and working methods.
feel welcome to bring your own cameras too.

analog media and experiments:
slide film, negative film, b/w..
processing methods and experiments

13.11.
darkroom

20.11.
digital media
raw, jpeg, tiff…
technical aspects and workflows

27.11.
scanning:
introduction and hands-on with different scanners
scanning for archiving, prints and video.

4.12.
digital image manipulations using photoshop
some basics and some wild things to try

11.12.
printing:
pixels vs ppi vs dpi (yes again, because it’s rather important)
basic color management
introduction and hands-on to printing.

after christmas, we could either continue with some in-depth photoshop tricks or a closer look at moving images, like the preparation of film projects, some discussions about HD vs PAL and experiments to change the appearance of digital video, depending on the preference of the people joining the workshop.

Like in the last semester class meetings will be biweekly.

hello class,

for those who don’t know yet, i’m at the universitiy during the semester break as well, wednesday and thursday 13-17.00, if i’m away for a few days i’ll let everybody know trough the class mailing list and the blog.

i also would like to ask everybody to only call me on my mobile if it’s something *really* urgent. it gets a bit annoying if i get ten calls every week asking when i’m at the universitiy next time, or where to buy DV tapes etc. if you would like to discuss a project, just come by at the university, during the semester break there’s usually not a lot happening so i have plenty of time and it’s much more pleasant to talk to people directly rather then trying to explain a complex topic over the phone or in a few lines of an email.

we’ll also have to handle the printing much more strictly in the future:
printing is *only* possible with an advance payment from now on (no exceptions)!

finally, there wont be technical workshops during the semester break because a lot of people are away, but if there’s any interest (let me know) i would gladly show and discuss some films, for example:

“man of aran” (a documentary by robert flaherty)
“when we were kings” (a documentary about muhammed ali)
