The new religious movements around the world are characterized by promises of salvation – but also of economic prosperity. These movements operate according to the model of international corporations.
Aernout Mik’s multichannel video installation brings documentary footage of Pentecostal churches in Lagos, Belo Horizonte, and Rio de Janeiro to staged public events at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, involving over 200 actors. The work sets new kinds of religious communities opposite the large secular congregations of the business world, which have incorporated veiled religious rites and features. Their commercial character mutates into an ambiguous form that merges collective secular and religious rituals. From various source materials, a landscape of the transitions between the religious and the secular takes shape.
Aernout Mik is a Dutch artist whose video installations, sculptures, and performances allow for a reflective engagement between spectator and artwork. He was awarded the A.H. Heineken Prize for Art in 2002. He represented the Netherlands in the Dutch Pavillon at the 52nd Venice Biennale, Venice, 2007 with multiple works and an architectural intervention, and was at the Museum of Modern Art in New York with his solo show Parallel Corner. Mik’s recent exhibitions include amongst other Communitas, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 2013, and Reactivation, Power State of Art, 9th Shanghai Biennale, Shanghai, 2012. In 2013, he is part of a group exhibition at Artplay in Moscow and at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Poland.

Von einem Dokumentarfilm erwarten wir eigentlich dass er uns
eine Sache oder ein Ereignis objektiv darstellt. Das dies im
Grunde unmöglich ist wird aber schon dadurch klar, dass selbst
wenn zwei Person das gleiche Ereignis direkt beobachten dieses
oft unterschiedlich wahrgenommen wird. In diesem Seminar geht
daher nicht um Objektivität sondern um den persönlichen Zugang
zum Dokumentarfilm: um die Persönlichkeit des Filmemachers und
die Persönlichkeit des Zuschauers, und die Kontaktfläche dazwischen.

We generally expect that a documentary film shows the events of
things in an objective, undistorted way. On the other hand, the
simple fact that two persons often judge the same event totally
different, even if they experience it first hand, casts serious
doubt if such a thing as objective filmmaking is actually possible.
Therefore this seminar is not about objectivity, but about the
personal approach to documentary films: the personality of the
filmmaker and the personality of the spectactor, and the contact
in between.

After Effecs hat sich zum Allzweckswerkzeug für
Videobearbeitung entwickelt. Animationen, Visuals, Titel-Design,
Compositing, Special Effects, Retouche, Farbkorrekturen und
vieles mehr können damit gemacht werden.
Durch diese Vielfalt wirkt das Programm aber auch kompliziert
und manchmal verwirrend. In diesem Workshop sollen
Berührungsängste überwunden und erste Experimente gemacht
werden, sowie ein kleiner Einblick in die verschiedenen
Möglichkeiten gegeben werden. Eigenes digitales Foto- und
Videomaterial und Ideen sind ausdrücklich erwünscht!

Tonaufnahmen scheinen im Vergleich zum Filmaufnahmen eigentlich
sehr einfach – laut oder leise ist fast das einzige was man an
einem Tonrekorder einstellen muss. Trotzdem haben viele Faktoren
einen grossen Einfluss auf die Qualität und vor allem den
Charakter der Aufnahmen wie der Aufnahmeraum, die Art und
Platzierung der Mikrophone, etc.
In diesem Workshop werden diese Faktoren besprochen und
praktisch ausprobiert und angehört

Digitale Videokameras sind auf der einen Seite sehr simpel: Man
drückt auf den Aufnahmeknopf und “what-you-see-is-what-you-get”.
Andererseits sind die Aufnahmeformate und Abspielgeräte so
vielseitig geworden dass sehr oft Probleme in der Bildqualität
oder Kompatibilität entstehen.
In diesem Seminar werden die grundlegenden Faktoren besprochen
und praktische Szenarios durchgespielt: Ich Filme mit einem
iPhone und möchte es am Schluss auf DVD brennen. Ich habe eine
5D und muss eine Blu-Ray verschicken. Ich habe HDV aufgenommen
und möchte eine schöne Version auf Vimeo hochladen. Das Ziel
ist dass man nachher gewappnet ist sinnvolle Entscheidungen zum
Workflow von digitalem Video zu treffen.

Image Employment presents recent moving image works that investigate various modes of contemporary production. The selected works illustrate differing approaches to the subject, from observational films that avoid participation in capitalistic image creation, to videos that engage corporate omnipotence by employing its processes, as well as works that complicate these two tendencies.
Many of the films in the exhibition take an oppositional approach to commercial image making. In Kevin Jerome Everson’s Quality Control African-American workers from an Alabama dry-cleaning factory are shown relentlessly carrying out their jobs in real time. Everson explores the duration and physicality of labor through a series of lengthy shots that draw attention to particular tasks such as working the pant press or ironing shirts.
Alternately, many video works in this exhibition employ corporate processes and communication by reiterating corporate imagery and intervening into sites of emergent industries and globalized consumption. DIS’ Watermarked I Kenzo Fall 2012, for example, arose out of a paid commission for Kenzo’s seasonal menswear collection. The work reflexively dramatizes the commercial advertisement form through the absurd excesses of the actors’ expressions, the politically correct racial composition, and a stock media infused aesthetic.
Invoking the growing convergence between labor, consumption, and that which propels them, Image Employment examines different ways artists use moving image work to engage and confront contemporary modes of production.

SCHULDNERBERICHTE (D 2001) dokumentiert den ambivalenten Veränderungsmoment im wiedervereinten Deutschland (heute scheinbar unendlich weit zurückliegend), als Krisen vom schambeladen-nestbeschutzerischen Stigma zur Erfolgschance umdefiniert wurden. Bei aller persönlichen Befangenheit beharren die Filme der Reihe auf einer bildnerisch-geistigen Distanzierungsmöglichkeit des Kinos/Fernsehens gegenüber totaler Vergesellschaftung und ihrer theoretischen Elaboration. D.W. Griffith brauchte wenige Minuten, um in A CORNER IN WHEAT (USA 1909) das Richtige und Falsche an Marx’ „ursprünglicher Akkumulation“, „Gesetz vom tendenziellen Fall der Profitrate“ zu zeigen; Erich von Stroheim nahm sich Stunden, um in GREED (USA 1923/24) auf die Abgründe einer bei Griffith bereits sichtbaren, antagonistisch männlich/weiblich-polarisierten Triebstruktur hinter dem Wirtschaften hinzuweisen. Zhang Peili, playfully dubbed the dean of Chinese video, conducted some of the earliest Chinese contemporary experiments with technology and today presides as head of the sleek, well-equipped New Media Art Center at his alma mater, the China Academy of Arts in Hangzhou. The two-decade span of his career to date encompasses the whole history of video in the People’s Republic, from its private, technically crude beginnings to its current global, futuristic cachet.^[2]
