“…past surpassing catastrophe”

Seminar on contemporary media theory and visual cultural studies Mo, 10-13h R115.
This seminar is an introduction to cutting edge media theory as well as a practical exercise run in the context of the project “Living Archive” by Arsenal and Freunde der Deutschen Kinemathek. [1] We will produce works in the scope of their project, which aims to provide access to the archives of Freunde der Deutschen Kinemathek (huge collection of independent films) in order to actively use it.
This practical part of the project will be supplemented by readings around recent media theory relating to dispersion, dissemination, the global circulation of digital artefacts and it´s political economies, the status of digital image/objects, the 3D military entertainment complex, the danger of archival historicism, and the withdrawal of tradition past surpassing catastrophe.
You will be required to give a presentation on one of the texts. This is mandatory, i.e. non-negotiable and a requirement for taking part in the project.
Authors of texts to be read will include: Brian Massumi, Suely Rolnik, Cory Arcangel, Seth Price, Jalal Toufic, Thomas Elsaesser,  Arielle Azoulay, Georges Didi-Huberman and many more.
A detailed syllabus will be posted soon and texts uploaded in the beginning of October.

the color of money – actitivies 14th-17th july 2011

A casino will be squatting R98 from 14.7-17.7.
You know, casino, like horse-betting, bingo, blackjack, shady characters who’d trick you out of your last piece of underpants (but pay your cab-ride home), gasoline and all the shenanigans.
other than that:
two dark rooms with perfect screenings. expect human bird cages, military reenactors, making of´s, national dummys, intense interiors, extended memory, anti-aging video,  the labour of  love and reverse shitters among many other inspiring time based items in 98 and 248. There is a topical focus on the urgent question of how to squat US real estate and art galleries and a special appearance of “Schatz im Silbersee”, harald reinl, around 1972!!!
a see-all white cube in 115 and  musical mystery performance in 114.
Thank you to Amir, Kristof, Till, Alex, Vincent, Flavio and Yara for organizing!

Japanese cinema: "Akahige", Wed June 22, 16h, R 115

I was thinking about our discussion last week quite a bit and would like to show Akahige (Redbeard) this week rather then Dersu Uzala, because it really is very strong on those topics (story advancment, character development, author’s intention..)
I hope that’s ok with everybody, I can bring a few copies of Dersu for those that want to see it, or we can watch it next week if there’s enough interest.
