MONDAY SCREENING TURNING THE KEYS

2012
so many voices for the new monday ponday date.
wir sitzen alle im selben boot: the kodex ends.
how can we push nuklearism to maya jaguar warrior buttons?
sounds too exotic?
we start with a gentle lo-fi memory of our first EDUCATION date and show

Missile(1987)
Dir. Frederick Wiseman
the christian science monitor proudly prescribes:
“[MISSILE] does not frighten viewers with melodramatic scenes of atomic holocaust, nuclear winter or East-West confrontations. Instead, it merely documents the step-by-step training of the intelligent, responsible, sincere and likable men and women who have their fingers on the controls of the U.S. nuclear arsenal. The officers selected for training and their instructors appear to be of high moral caliber. But the calmness, responsibility and intelligence with which they face the potential destruction of our civilization is what makes MISSILE so unnerving; it brings home that nuclear war could really happen. Wiseman continues his unique obsession to force viewers to experience — and reevaluate — American institutions at first hand.”
DONT FORGET YOUR ATOMIC WAR SURVEYS

MONDAY SCREENING ATOMIC SUPERHERO

in a world where your magnitude shrank to a scientific scribbeling, where your endeavours are but a single tin can in the vaults of world commodity-creation.
who is not dreaming in hers/his personal laboratory mirroring the convex face in the test tubes?
who not wants to set sail for the ocean of self-dicovery!
it is easier than you think
lern how to activate your very potentials – using the secrets of the universe –
become an
ATOMIC SUPER HERO:

– The Atlas rested on the launching pad… then, slowly at first, began to rise…
What of the man inside? –
Terry Curtis (born Terrence Kurtzenberg, he had later Anglicized his name) was an atomic scientist in the 1930s and 1940s. He was working as a technician in a special experimental rocket (Atlas) when it accidentally launched with him trapped inside.
“…as the Atlas climbed into the sky the dense troposphere would give way 10 miles out to the thinner stratosphere… then at 50 miles, it was in the ionosphere – the atomic warhead was set to explode at 300 miles above earth (…) The heat generated by the rocket as it accelerated to 20’000 MPH was unbearable. Everything grew too warm too quickly. The perspiration on my face dried, the moisture in my body vanished.”
Then, precisely on schedule, the warhead in the Atlas nose cone was triggered.
“…I could see a huge beam of projected light flooding up into infinity. It was like a laser light, caused by the ionisation. It was light-bluish, and it was very beautiful. I watched it for several seconds. Then the light took me to pieces. At that instant of fission, I was not flesh, bone and blood at all…”
The desiccated molecular skeleton was intact but a change, never known to man, had taken place.
“…I began to feel sick. I knew one of the first symptoms of radiation illness was vomiting, but I was thinking, have I eaten something? I was trying to keep the worst thoughts at bay. It was impossible to say how much radiation I had taken in, but I knew it was a large dose.”

monday 28.11 10am, "surpassing disaster"

We ll read brillant text by GD huberman on extras (Kornelia and Lena will present) and watch this ama ing work belonging to the equally ama ing genre of pornomiseria (courtesy of Pablo Lafuente):
Aggarando Pueblo, 1978
“When writing film criticism was not enough, Mayolo and I chose to put it into practice in films themselves. This is why we made Agarrando pueblo, as a response to the proliferation of poverty-porn in our field and in the Third World. It was like a gob of spit in the soup of Third World film, and it earned us a great deal of criticism and ostracism in European and Latin American festivals, used as they are to swallow tinned poverty so that their bad conscience is at rest.” (Luis Ospina) Agarrando pueblo (a Colombian idiom meaning “to fool people”) recreates the story of a couple of film directors desperately looking for poverty in the streets of Cali and even manipulating reality when they fail to find what they are looking for. Film in film, denunciation of vampirism at its purest, this film presents reality in the guise of fiction and, in doing so, makes a categorical statement on the opportunistic discourse of Latin American documentary (and documentaries on Latin America) in the 1970s

Agarrando pueblo (The Vampires of Poverty) is a parody directed against the vices of this type of “social” and “testimonial” cinema. In the film, two such filmmakers travel around impoverished sectors of the cities of Bogotá and Cali in search of the images of abjection needed to complete a documentary commissioned by German TV. With a brilliant use of black humor, and the concept of the film within the film, a silent B/W camera allows audiences to document the “vampire” filmmakers’ itinerary as they induce, capture, and recount color images of beggars, prostitutes, children who live on the streets, and a whole list of marginal urban characters they must include in their production. These filmmakers are thus equated to vampires who feed off the sweat, misery, and blood of subaltern, marginal subjects.

Unrated, 28 min.

MONDAY SCREENING HIROSHIMA

if it wouldnt be for monday screening i wouldnt show up in school anymore.  all the kids were laughing about me – – – but now that im part of the warmwinter team theyre looking up to me – and marvel my vast knowledge about nulcear war.
i opened up a lot, gained self confiendce from the pleasure of seeing the others tremble from my symptom descriptions of radioation sickness.

HIROSHIMA. A momentum, history brought to a grain of sand that bears the name of oppenheimer. The japanese seem to be far less obsessed with the bomb than a german mind can tolerate – so are the americans. They did what had to be done to end the war and show some yank muscle (what eventually would become the muscle of hulk). Time for a german description of the unspeakable to draw some lines of guilt.

HIROSHIMA. After the surrender of the japanese emperor and charlie chaplin fan hirohito. American scientists flew into hiroshima to evaluate their bomb experiment. Drawing chalk lines around exposed shadows of evaporated persons in the epicentre, analyzing injured and effected people rather than treating them. The a-bomb was a designed weapon, born out of the golden age of science, the device that ended it.

HIROSHIMA. Explosion-affected-people. Hibakusha. The name for a-bomb survivors in japan. They are victimized photograph-persons for peace-education in japan highly  controled by interest groups. After the war the a-bomb was the thick matter of japanese propaganda of an innocent country that became victim of a western imperial-interest war. Their stories are subject of the narrative pool that was translated to film about the events.

monday screening is not just a place for laughter and campability!
Monday screening: a warm place on a lonley monday.
